Dr.HuiminZhaoistheStevenL.MillerChairofchemicalandbiomolecularengineeringattheUniversityofIllinoisatUrbana-Champaign(UIUC),directorofNSFAIInstituteforMoleculeSynthesis(moleculemaker.org),andEditorinChiefofACSSyntheticBiology.HereceivedhisB.S.degreeinBiologyfromtheUniversityofScienceandTechnologyofChinain1992andhisPh.D.degreeinChemistryfromtheCaliforniaInstituteofTechnologyin1998undertheguidanceofNobelLaureateDr.FrancesArnold.PriortojoiningUIUCin2000,hewasaprojectleaderattheIndustrialBiotechnologyLaboratoryoftheDowChemicalCompany.Hewaspromotedtofullprofessorin2008.Dr.Zhaohasauthoredandcoauthoredover420researcharticlesandover30issuedandpendingpatentapplications.Inaddition,hehasgivenover470plenary,keynote,orinvitedlectures.Thirtysix(36)ofhisformergraduatestudentsandpostdocsbecameprofessorsorprincipalinvestigatorsaroundtheworld.Dr.ZhaoreceivednumerousresearchandteachingawardsandhonorssuchasAIChEFP&BDivisionAward,ECIEnzymeEngineeringAward,ACSMarvinJohnsonAward,andSIMBCharlesThomAward.Hisprimaryresearchinterestsareinthedevelopmentandapplicationsofsyntheticbiology,machinelearning,andlaboratoryautomationtoolstoaddresssocietysmostdauntingchallengesinhealth,energy,andsustainability.

五、报告摘要

Syntheticbiologyaimstodesignnovelorimprovedbiologicalsystemsusingengineeringprinciples,whichhasbroadapplicationsinmedical,chemical,food,andagriculturalindustries.ThankstotherapidadvancesinDNAsequencingandsynthesis,genomeediting,artificialintelligence/machinelearning(AI/ML),andlaboratoryautomationinthepasttwodecades,syntheticbiologyhasenteredanewphaseofexponentialgrowth.Inthistalk,IwillhighlightourrecentworkonthedevelopmentofabiofoundrynamedIllinoisBiologicalFoundryforAdvancedBiomanufacturing(iBioFAB)andAI/MLtoolsforsyntheticbiologyapplicationsandthecreationofenzymeswithnew-to-natureactivities.Examplesincludebutarenotlimitedto:(1)BioAutomata:aself-drivingbiofoundryforpathwayengineeringandproteinengineering,(2)ECNet:anAItoolforenzymeengineering,(3)CLEAN:anAItoolforenzymefunctionprediction,(4)FAST-RiPP&FAST-NPS:anautomatedandscalableplatformforrapiddiscoveryofbioactivenaturalproducts,and(5)engineeredphotoenzymeswithnew-to-naturereactivityforasymmetricsynthesis.
